An osteopath can help with several types of sciatica injuries

Sciatica is a term used to describe nerve pain in the leg that is caused by irritation and/or compression of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica originates in the lower back, radiates deep into the buttock, and travels down the leg.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a term used to describe irritation to the ‘sciatic nerve’. The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the body and exits the spine from the fourth lumbar vertebra to the third sacral vertebrae and joins together as it exits and runs down the back of the leg through the buttock, back of the thigh and leg to the foot.

It feeds many muscles on the way down and can get pinched and irritated at any part of its path. The most common area of compression is the piriformis muscle in the buttock. If this gets tight it can irritate the sciatic nerve. Other causes can be any spinal compression through degenerative changes like spondylosis or osteopathic spurs compression, movement of the vertebrae itself like in spondylolisthesis or disc herniations or protrusions.

How Osteopathy may help Sciatica?

An osteopath would look at the body and test what is causing the irritation in the first place, therefore establishing the cause for sciatic irritation. Once that is understood they will

discuss this with you and discuss a treatment plan. Sometimes the sciatic nerve pain disappears easily and other times it can be more persistent, however, your osteopath will discuss what type of treatment you need and how long it might take to help your recovery.
