Osteopathy at work
Osteo Allies brings specialist osteopathic care to your company. We provide osteopathy within your workplace which is both an effective and convenient way of taking care of yourself.
With 1 in 3 adults experiencing back pain every day our osteopaths recognise keeping to deadlines and working at optimum efficiency is what you need in order to maximise your potential and keep clients happy. If you are in constant pain at work this can limit your productivity and concentration at work.
Our aim is to get to the root of the problem and reduce your pain. By catering a treatment plan to you and taking your lifestyle and workstation into consideration we can help to limit any aggravating factors that may be limiting your recovery. Our workstation assessments are extremely accurate as our advice will correspond to your specific diagnosis and treatment plan.
To qualify, our osteopaths have studied for four to five years for an undergraduate degree. This is considered to be similar to a medical degree, with more emphasis on anatomy and musculoskeletal medicine and includes more than 1,000 hours of training in a clinic setting. Our osteopaths are trained to work with other healthcare professionals, doctors and consultants to ensure the highest level of patient care. Your osteopath will address every part of your lifestyle from your past history, exercise and your working environment. These factors will help come to an accurate diagnosis and a manageable treatment plan. For example, postural problems lead to pain and misalignment, where the pain may not be felt until later, but everyday activities like standing for too long, driving to work, sitting at a desk and standing on the tube can affect how the body is functioning.
Our osteopaths firmly believe in exercise rehabilitation which is catered to the individual and recognises your personal strengths and weaknesses to ensure that the correct muscles are exercised within their limit.
Most common workplace injuries that we treat:
Neck pain – pain can be felt either on one or both shoulders and the neck. The neck may feel restricted, achy and sore. The head can feel heavy on the shoulders and there may be some pins and needles down the arm or in the fingers.
Headaches – tension headaches and migraines can be aggravated by poor posture at a workstation. The muscles will compensate for this and make the muscles in the neck very tight which will increase the intensity and frequency of the headaches experienced.
Shoulder/Elbow and Wrist pain – pain or pins and needles can be felt in the arm which may be intermittent or constant. This can be coming from the neck or from tight arm muscles impinging on nerves throughout the arm. Shoulder pain can be uncomfortable and you may feel like you need to rotate the shoulder and arm to get more comfortable.
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) – this is due to overuse. When using a keyboard or a mouse certain muscles in the forearm and even the shoulder can be in constant use. The symptoms include a sudden burst of pain in the affected area, weakness and lack of endurance and pain in the use of those muscles. RSI most commonly occurs in the wrist, elbow and shoulder.
Mid-back pain – when sitting in front of a computer for a long period of time the muscles in your mid-back need to stay contracted. Symptoms will include restricted movement, pain on either side of your spine in your mid-back area, and the feeling that you need to ‘stretch’ in order to get some relief from pain.
Lower back pain/sciatica – Lower back pain can feel like a dull constant ache at the base of your spine or there can be a sharp pain that may last seconds. This can be aggravated by poor workstations or just sitting for long periods of time.
Sciatica – is when the sciatic nerve has impinged in your lower back. After an examination with our osteopath, they will be able to tell you how and why the nerve has impinged and whether it is spinal or muscular. Symptoms include a sharp shooting pain down the back of the leg, or pain in the lower back and then a dull ache in the front of your calf.
Sports Injuries – if you cycle or run to work, sometimes if you do not stretch correctly it can cause muscles to cramp or go into spasm. In terms, these tight muscles can pull on your joints (lower back, knees, ankles) and cause pain in the joints. Symptoms can be a constant dull ache or sharp pains whilst running or cycling in the injured area.
The causes of the above symptoms and conditions should be examined by a professional to come to an accurate diagnosis, to help you work more efficiently, keep to deadlines and more importantly to remain pain-free. We treat conditions like the above every day and have seen long-lasting results.
Our osteopaths provide a high level of patient care in a convenient and relaxed environment. If you require ongoing treatment for a long-standing injury we are members of most private healthcare insurance policies and therefore you could be covered for private treatment.
