Sports Massage Therapy

Sports massage is a specialised technique for the treatment of muscle, tendon and ligament injuries. Everyone, not just athletes, can benefit from sports massage if they have pain caused by misuse of muscles or poor posture. There is a combination of remedial and deep tissue massage and muscle energy techniques during the treatment, this is usually combined with advice on remedial exercises that will be used to personalise a rehabilitation programme to meet the individual needs of the patient.

Sports massage can be used for any injury and at any time.

There are a number of key areas that sports and remedial massage can benefit:

Monitoring of the condition of muscles and other soft tissues can help prevent injury. Sports massage helps to break down scar tissue and adhesions in over-contracted tissue that causes stiffness and pain during training and recovery. The recovery helps the elasticity of the muscles, ligaments and tendons around the joints, improving joint mobility and returning you to a greater range of movement quickly.

The psychological benefits of massage can help to reduce anxiety, stress and tension helping to support overall wellbeing.

Receptors in our body that sense touch, pressure, tissue length and warmth are stimulated causing automatic relaxation. Sports massage has also been shown to release hormones responsible for relaxation and endorphins.
