Why Choose Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment, it uses the body’s natural mechanisms of healing through a combined use of different techniques. It is mainly focused on the treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders. We work on muscles, ligaments, joints and the connective tissues – helping to maintain circulation, innervation, flexibility and function. Being a protected title, Osteopaths undergo a minimum of 4 years training in medicine. We are primary healthcare professionals and have strict standards to which are maintained yearly through continual professional development (CPD). This must be met in order to keep our title. Therefore, we are constantly evolving our practice to keep up with the latest research and developments in the field.
Is it safe?
The rigorous training Osteopaths undertake makes us a first point of contact for many people, if we feel after consultation and assessment that a referral is needed, we are able to advise regarding that. We are trained not only in musculoskeletal medicine but also clinical medicine, so treatment is tailored to your needs, making it a safe and effective healthcare tool, and often the first port of call.
What can it do for you?
As osteopaths we see patients coming from all ages and different backgrounds – from the injured sportsperson to the issues of the IT consultant, right through from the young to the elder client. Our patients needs can vary; a specific injury, injury prevention, reduction in stiffness or improvements in flexibility. We can advice on nutrition, exercise and all round well being in order to help improve your health.
What should I expect?
In your first appointment with us, we will take a detailed history of your presenting complaint/presenting concern and your past medical history, this is then followed by an initial examination. In this we perform some gentle movements and tests in which we then come to a conclusion with you about your treatment plan. Treatment then varies depending on the results of the consultation and also your personal preferences. This is all done in the initial visit.
What is treatment like?
Treatment varies on the individual and the circumstances of the injury. It can vary from a variety of techniques; gentle soft tissue techniques, deeper soft tissue manipulation, the movement of joints through mobilisation, various forms of stretches and exercises. Depending on the osteopath you see there are also a number of other modalities that can be used. Talk to your prospective osteopath on what they can offer you. The number of treatment sessions can vary from person to person – but we average between 3-5 sessions for an acute injury.

Most patients refer themselves directly to osteopaths, although it is sometimes advised to keep your GP informed to facilitate the most appropriate care for you.
